The business landscape of Matanuska-Susitna Borough, or Mat-Su, has evolved significantly over the years, according to Mayor DeVries. While in 1985, residents had to travel to Anchorage for many goods and services, the borough now boasts numerous stores and businesses locally. However, around 41 percent of the workforce still commutes outside of Mat-Su for higher-paying jobs, mainly to Anchorage and the North Slope.
Despite this, Mat-Su has seen economic growth and development, with the healthcare sector expanding by 74 percent in the last decade. Several companies have chosen Mat-Su as their base of operations, including Goose Creek Correctional Center, Cruz Construction, Inc., and Denali Brewing, among others.
The economic transformation began in the mid-1980s with the opening of key locations such as Cottonwood Creek Mall in Wasilla and Pioneer Square Mall in Palmer. These malls have since been replaced by more modern shopping options like Target in Wasilla and Fred Meyer in Palmer.
Overall, Mat-Su has become a hub for businesses and economic activity, with a growing workforce and increasing local services. The borough continues to attract companies looking to serve other parts of the state, further enhancing its reputation as a thriving business center in Alaska.
