The Alaska State Ombudsman, Kate Burkhart, is stepping down from her position in April after eight years of service. During her tenure, Burkhart and her team have conducted numerous investigations that resulted in significant systemic reforms within the state of Alaska. The ombudsman’s office plays a crucial role in investigating complaints against state agencies and recommending solutions to rectify them.
One of the highlights of Burkhart’s time as ombudsman was the release of a report in 2019 that identified major issues in the treatment of patients at the Alaska Psychiatric Institute. In 2022, the office made recommendations for systemic changes in the Department of Corrections following complaints of excessive force used on inmates.
Burkhart will be moving to Maine to be closer to her family and will be taking on a new role as the director of Maine’s Bureau of Labor Standards. Assistant Ombudsman Jacob Carbaugh will serve as the acting ombudsman until a permanent replacement is appointed by the Alaska Legislature.
Despite potential budget cuts, Burkhart emphasized the importance of a robust ombudsman’s office to maintain accountability and justice for Alaska’s residents. The office provides crucial support to individuals who encounter difficulties with state programs and services, ensuring that their concerns are addressed and resolved.
Alaska is one of only five states to have a statewide ombudsman, highlighting the significance of the role in promoting transparency and accountability within the government.
