Israeli Air Strikes Target Military Sites in Southern Syria, Claims Lives

In a recent escalation of tensions, Israeli air strikes on military sites in southern Syria resulted in at least two fatalities and left 19 others injured, according to the Syrian state news agency, SANA. The Israeli military confirmed the strikes on Monday night, asserting that their targets included weapons and vehicles associated with the regime of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

An official statement from the Israeli army declared that the operations were focused on command centers and military assets posing imminent threats to the State of Israel. They emphasized their commitment to eliminating any military risks within southern Syria. The strikes specifically targeted an area in Deraa, a province that has previously been a focus of Israeli military action aimed at degrading the operational capacity of Syrian forces.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that one of the targeted military sites was formerly used by al-Assad’s regime but is now under the control of Syria’s new government. Israeli strikes in Deraa are not uncommon; earlier this month, Israeli forces targeted several military installations in the same region, citing security concerns regarding their proximity to the Jordanian border.

Al Jazeera’s reporter in Damascus highlighted that Monday’s attacks were part of Israel’s broader strategy to diminish Syria’s military capabilities. The ongoing air strikes pose significant challenges to the Syrian government, particularly in asserting control over the southern regions of the country.

Historically, Israel has conducted hundreds of air strikes in Syria, primarily targeting Iranian and Hezbollah positions, while also maintaining a troop presence in a UN-patrolled buffer zone on the Golan Heights. The recent actions underscore the persistent instability and the complex dynamics of the Syrian conflict, drawing international attention.
