Russia Warns of Military Tensions Amidst UK and France’s Peacekeeping Plans in Ukraine
In a stark warning, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for Russia’s foreign ministry, has accused France and the UK of preparing for military intervention in Ukraine disguised as a peacekeeping mission. Zakharova’s comments come as both nations convened in Paris with other allies to discuss potential European plans for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.
The notion of deploying European troops to Ukraine has been firmly denounced by Moscow, which views such moves as an unacceptable escalation that could precipitate a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO forces. "Our country stands categorically against this scenario," Zakharova stated during a briefing, adding that the UK aims to incite a "bloodbath" with Russia by provoking EU nations.
She characterized the UK and its allies’ ambitions as a "golden dream" to unify European countries with the Anglo-Saxon coalition against Russia. The tensions were echoed by Germany’s foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, who emphasized the urgent necessity for a European defense union. Speaking at the Europe 2025 conference, Baerbock asserted that the current landscape of 150 disparate weapon systems across Europe hampers effective defense efforts.
She stated, "If we continue to use 150 different weapon systems in Europe…we will not be able to be effective enough." Baerbock concluded that the establishment of a European defense union is a matter of timing rather than feasibility, signaling a potential shift in European military coordination and priorities.
The escalating rhetoric underscores the fragility of the geopolitical situation in Europe, as discussions of military intervention could further complicate an already tense standoff in Ukraine.
