The Western Interior Ski Association (WISA) has been providing young skiers in Alaska with the opportunity to compete and develop their skills since its formation in 1987. Due to the high expenses associated with traveling to town for competitions, a group of passionate skiers, led by Alaska High School Hall of Fame member John Miles, took it upon themselves to create WISA. One of the founding members, Hugny, has been involved in almost every meet since its inception.
According to Hugny, skiing has the power to change lives and build character in young athletes. It requires a certain level of determination and resilience to push through the tough conditions and come out on top. Despite the challenges of cold weather and strong winds, the skiers who persevere and push themselves find great satisfaction in the sport.
The creation of WISA has given skiers in rural areas the opportunity to compete against city kids and showcase their talent on a bigger platform. The association has helped level the playing field and provide a more inclusive environment for young athletes from all backgrounds. The sense of camaraderie and support within the skiing community has created a positive and encouraging atmosphere for the skiers to excel in their sport.
Through WISA, young skiers in Alaska have found a platform to showcase their talent, push their limits, and develop lifelong skills that will benefit them on and off the slopes. The association continues to play a vital role in the development of skiing in the state, creating opportunities for young athletes to thrive and reach their full potential.
