ADF&G Limits Bag on Northern Pike Sport Fishing and Addresses Subsistence Worries

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has announced a new bag limit on sport fishing for northern pike in the Minto Flats region. Starting June 1 and lasting until October 14, anglers will now be restricted to only two fish, with one over 30 inches allowed. This measure is put in place in order to protect the fish population from declining below a certain threshold, while still allowing for subsistence fishing.

The decision to reduce the bag limit for sport fishing is not new and has been occurring frequently in recent years due to the popularity of subsistence fishing in the area. The ADF&G expects this limitation to become a routine occurrence in the future.

The northern pike is considered naturally occurring in most of Alaska’s waterways, with the exception of the Southcentral region where it was illegally introduced. Despite its reputation as an invasive species in some areas, the fish has been part of the Yukon drainage for thousands of years.

The restriction on sport fishing aims to ensure a proper balance between subsistence and recreational fishing, while also protecting the northern pike population. By reducing the bag limit, the ADF&G hopes to maintain the sustainability of the fishery and prevent overfishing.

For more information on the regulation and guidelines for fishing in the Minto Flats region, anglers are encouraged to visit the ADF&G website.
