Anchorage and parts of southcentral Alaska were greeted with a surprise in April as they woke up to snow blanketing the ground. While snow in April is not uncommon, receiving it after a long winter might not be appreciated by many residents. The city of Anchorage received about three inches of snow, with up to 4 inches falling in higher elevations. The higher elevations could end up with as much as 7 inches before the snowfall event comes to an end.
A large rotation of low pressure system is expected to persist over the Gulf of Alaska throughout the week, ensuring coastal areas will continue to see rounds of April showers. In terms of temperatures, Klawock was the hot spot with temperatures reaching 51 degrees, while Atqasuk dropped to a frigid 22 degrees below zero, making it the cold spot.
