Fishing for Steelhead in Peterson Creek, Southeast Alaska Temporarily Suspended due to Low Numbers

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has announced the closure of a portion of Peterson Creek, north of Juneau, to sport fishing for all species from April 15 to June 30, 2025. The closure is in place to protect spawning steelhead, as adult steelhead index counts in the creek have been below average in recent years. The closure has been implemented annually since 2019 to provide additional protection for the steelhead population. In the last two years, steelhead counts have improved, with the 2024 count exceeding the long-term average. The closure for the 2025 season aims to ensure the continued healthy returns of steelhead in Peterson Creek. For more information, individuals can contact the Division of Sport Fish Region 1 office in Douglas at 907-465-4270 or visit the department’s website.
