Michigan Man Found Dead After Working on Fishing Vessels in Alaska
Jacob Riley Veeser, a 28-year-old man from Escanaba in Michigan, was found dead in the water along Captain’s Bay Road in Unalaska, Alaska on April 5. Veeser had spent nearly a decade working on fishing vessels in the dangerous Bering Sea. He was reported missing by crew members of the F/V Lady Alaska, one of the vessels featured on the popular documentary series “Deadliest Catch,” on April 4. Search efforts involving the U.S. Coast Guard, Unalaska Fire Department, and Alaska State Troopers were launched, but Veeser was tragically found deceased.
Unalaska, located in the Aleutian Islands near the end of the Alaska Peninsula, is a key population center in the region. Veeser had last been seen walking down the G1 dock at UniSea, Inc.’s processing facility in the midst of a winter storm with harsh weather conditions including high winds, blowing snow, and slippery roads.
Veeser’s family has been notified of his passing. The circumstances of his death and the events leading up to it remain under investigation. The loss of Veeser serves as a reminder of the risks faced by those who work in the fishing industry, especially in the challenging waters of Alaska.
