U.S. admiral at NATO dismissed, part of Trump’s military purge heavily affecting women.

U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, the only woman on NATO’s military committee, was abruptly fired over the weekend by the Trump administration. Although no reason was officially given, officials claim it was likely due to her support for diversity in the force. This marks the ninth firing of a senior U.S. military officer, including four women, since President Trump returned to office.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made the decision to dismiss Chatfield, but it remains unclear if he received direction from President Trump. There has been a push to remove leaders who promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion in the military, as well as erase DEI programs and online content. Chatfield was on a list of senior military officers labeled as “woke” by a conservative group, leading to her dismissal.

Chatfield, a Navy helicopter pilot and former commander in Afghanistan, had been serving on NATO’s military committee. Sen. Mark Warner expressed concern over the firing, calling Trump’s actions a threat to national security. The removal of military heroes and historic mentions from Defense Department websites and social media pages has sparked backlash from lawmakers and citizens.

Despite her decorated military career and accomplishments, Chatfield’s dismissal highlights a larger issue of retaliation against those who support diversity within the armed forces. The campaign to eliminate DEI programs and content continues to face scrutiny and criticism for prioritizing ideology over military readiness.
