Jacob Riley Veeser, an Escanaba native, found dead while working on a fishing vessel in Alaska

UNALASKA, Alaska — Jacob Riley Veeser, 28, originally from Escanaba, was discovered deceased while working on a fishing vessel in Alaska. Veeser had been working on vessels in the Bering Sea for approximately nine years, with his most recent position as a crew member aboard the F/V Lady Alaska, a vessel featured on the television series “Deadliest Catch” on the Discovery Channel.

On Friday evening, the Unalaska Police Department responded to a report that Veeser was missing. He was last seen walking down the G1 dock at UniSea Inc.’s processing facility on Iliuliuk Harbor. Veeser went missing during a winter storm with high winds, blowing snow, and whiteout conditions in the area.

The City of Unalaska’s Departments of Police, Fire, and Ports and Harbors initiated a search along the shoreline based on weather conditions at the time. The search was eventually suspended at 10:25 p.m. The following day, the search resumed with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, Alaska State Troopers, and local departments, leading to the discovery of Veeser’s body in the water along Captains Bay Road.

Veeser’s next of kin and the State of Alaska Medical Examiner’s office have been notified of the incident. The Unalaska Police Department continues to investigate the matter.
