UNIFE proposes $3.8 billion investment to enhance railway technology in Europe

The European Rail Supply Industry Association (UNIFE) is calling for a €3bn investment in a dedicated Rail Research Programme in the upcoming EU Budget to support advancements in rail technology. This initiative aims to maintain the European rail supply industry’s technological leadership amid global competition and improve travel and freight movement across the continent. The investment will focus on developing technologies such as ERTMS, FRMCS, DAC, and ATO, and aims to strengthen European rail capabilities while supporting the shift from road to rail for freight transport. These advancements are expected to enhance services for passengers and increase the reliability of the European rail network. UNIFE plans to propose a pre-deployment strategy to integrate these advanced technologies into more EU rail networks. This investment aligns with Europe’s climate neutrality goals and is essential for the success of future High-Speed Rail projects and completing the Trans-European Transport Network. Additionally, the International Union of Railways has initiated the FP2-MORANE-2 project to test FRMCS technology under real-world conditions, with UNIFE and various railways and suppliers involved in the consortium. This investment is seen as crucial for ensuring that leading rail technologies are developed by European-based companies and implemented worldwide.
