The Howard Center and FRONTLINE report on disappearing Alaska native villages to raise awareness.

FRONTLINE and the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at Arizona State University have released a new short documentary revealing that parts of Alaska are warming at up to four times the global rate. This has led to Alaska Native villages facing challenges such as flooding, erosion, and warming temperatures, with some tribes considering relocation to higher ground.

The documentary, “Alaska’s Vanishing Native Villages,” written and directed by Patty Talahongva, explores the cultural and environmental impacts on these remote coastal communities. Talahongva speaks to residents and leaders about the difficult decisions they are forced to make in order to preserve their way of life.

The film will premiere on PBS on Earth Day, April 22, and will be available online as well. It follows Talahongva on her journeys to the far western part of Alaska, near the Bering Sea and the Arctic Circle, to capture the stories of these communities.

“Alaska’s Vanishing Native Villages” showcases the resilience and determination of the tribes as they navigate these challenges and work towards preserving their traditions and culture. The documentary serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to address climate change to protect these vulnerable communities.
