A family of five visiting from Spain, including a couple celebrating a birthday, and the pilot were killed in a tragic helicopter crash over Manhattan on Thursday. The Bell 206 sightseeing helicopter departed from a Wall Street heliport and crashed into the Hudson River, breaking apart midair and plunging upside down into the water. All six victims, including three children, were pulled from the water and pronounced dead. The pilot had reportedly said he needed fuel before the crash, but never arrived at the designated landing area. The crash was captured on video and witnesses reported hearing a loud noise before the chopper fell into the water. The helicopter was operated by New York Helicopters, and the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash. Weather does not appear to have been a factor, but an inflight failure may have occurred, prompting the sudden crash. The victims included a senior executive with Siemens and his family, who were on a tourist flight to celebrate a birthday. The wreckage of the helicopter has been recovered from the river, and authorities are working to uncover more information about the tragedy.
