Rory McIlroy won the 89th Masters Tournament in a one-hole playoff against Justin Rose, securing his fifth major championship and first since 2014. McIlroy entered the final round with a two-shot lead but found himself tied with Rose after 15 holes. Despite a bogey on the 18th hole, McIlroy birdied the playoff hole to clinch the victory. Rose nearly staged a comeback with a final-round 66, finishing the day tied with McIlroy at 11 under par after starting seven strokes behind. McIlroy overcame a shaky start to the day but managed to hold on for the win, avoiding a collapse similar to his 2011 Masters performance. The victory ended an 11-year major championship drought for McIlroy, who had not won a major tournament since the 2014 U.S. Open. McIlroy’s victory earned him a $4.2 million prize, while Rose received $2.268 million for his second-place finish. The next major golf tournament is the PGA Championship starting on May 15 at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
