Alaska Governor’s Mansion Could Become Short-Term Rental
Representative Will Stapp from Fairbanks has introduced a bill that would allow the Alaska Governor’s Mansion in Juneau to be rented out short-term, when the governor is not using it. The bill aims to bring in extra money for the state, especially during budget constraints. The mansion is a large property with six bedrooms, ten bathrooms, and a ballroom, costing the state $800,000 per year to run.
While there may be challenges to making the governor’s mansion a short-term rental, some community members are supportive of the idea as long as the funds generated are used for upkeep and other positive purposes. Representative Stapp is hopeful that the bill will pass the House legislature and is also looking into the potential rental of other state-owned properties that are underutilized.
Although the Governor’s office was not available for comment on the proposal, discussions about utilizing government-owned properties for additional revenue are ongoing. The bill was first presented to the State and Affairs Committee last month, indicating that it is still in the early stages of consideration.
Overall, the idea of turning the Alaska Governor’s Mansion into a short-term rental has sparked interest and conversation within the community, with some seeing it as an innovative way to generate much-needed funds for the state.
