Alaska House votes to honor political figure by renaming ocean park; enhancing community recognition and engagement.

Alaska lawmakers have voted to name a park in honor of Victor Fischer, one of the signers of the Alaska Constitution. The Alaska House of Representatives voted 37-3 to name Shoup Bay State Marine Park after Fischer, who was the last living signatory of the constitution before his death in 2023 at age 99. Located 5 miles from Valdez, the park would be renamed Vic Fischer Shoup Bay State Marine Park if the Alaska Senate passes the bill and Gov. Mike Dunleavy signs it into law.

Fischer was a prominent figure in Alaska politics for many years and was a key sponsor of legislation that created the state’s first 13 marine parks during his time in the Alaska Legislature in 1983. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources has stated that the name change can be done at no cost and will be implemented during the regular schedule of sign replacements.

The initiative to rename the park in honor of Fischer was originally reported by the Alaska Beacon, an independent news organization that covers Alaska state government. This move reflects the significant contributions and influence that Fischer had on Alaska’s political landscape and conservation efforts during his lifetime.
