Alaska State Legislature recognizes North Pole flag football team for winning state championship

North Pole High School’s flag football team continues to receive recognition for their historic win at the state’s inaugural Alaska School Activities Association Flag Football State Championships. The team was recently honored by the 34th Alaska State Legislature with a signed certificate in recognition of their achievement. Co-head coach Jamie Darby expressed pride in being part of such a significant moment in the team’s history.

The Patriots had an impressive season, with a ranking of No. 8 nationally by the USA TODAY Sports Super 25 flag football selection committee. They secured a state championship trophy for the first time since 2022 and sent two seniors to the NFL FLAG High School Girls Showcase at the 2025 NFL Pro Bowl Games.

One senior, Tiahna Guzman, will continue her flag football career at Bryant & Stratton College in Wisconsin, joining a select group of Alaskans playing flag football at the collegiate level. The team’s turnaround from a winless season in 2022 to a 15-1 record in 2024 is attributed to their focus on communication, accountability, and cold weather training.

North Pole will have a strong team returning for the 2025 season, with key players like quarterback Taimane Skipps and running back Jade Skipps leading the way. The team’s success has sparked excitement and pride in the community, with Darby crediting their collaborative approach and dedication for their remarkable achievements on the field.
