Elephants at San Diego Safari Park huddle together to shield calves during earthquake

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit San Diego, causing a herd of elephants at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to spring into action to protect their young. The five African elephants formed a circle to shield the two 7-year-old calves, Zuli and Mkhaya, from any potential threats. The older elephants, Ndlula, Umngani, and Khosi, remained vigilant with their ears spread and flapping even after the shaking had stopped. Elephants are intelligent and social animals that can feel sound through their feet, and they often huddle together in an “alert circle” when they sense danger. In a video of the incident, Zuli sought refuge between the adults while Mkhaya, the only male calf, wanted to show his independence on the edge of the circle. The female elephant, Khosi, reassured him by tapping him with her trunk, conveying that everything was okay. The elephants’ protective behavior showcased their instinctual parenting and defense mechanisms. About an hour later, when an aftershock occurred, the elephants briefly huddled again before dispersing once they confirmed everyone was safe. The incident highlighted the elephants’ strong bond and their natural instinct to protect the younger members of their group, demonstrating empathy and care within the herd.
