Alaska House approves budget with $1,400 PFD and $450 million deficit, focusing on fiscal responsibility.

Anchorage Democratic Rep. Andy Josephson led discussions on the operating budget in the Alaska House, which was advanced to the Senate with a $1,400 Permanent Fund dividend and a deficit of over $450 million spread across two fiscal years. The House faced tough decisions on how to allocate funding, balancing priorities like school funding and other essential services. While the one-time school funding increase of $253 million was included in the budget, the House had to consider various budget amendments to reduce the deficit.

The House approved the operating budget on a close vote of 21-19, with all Democrat members voting in favor and all Republicans voting against. Despite attempts by the minority to propose deeper budget cuts, the majority argued that the state’s services have already faced years of reductions. However, challenges lie ahead in filling the budget gap, as the Senate rejected the House’s unallocated $79 million cut.

The Legislature must now grapple with tough decisions to address the state’s fiscal challenges, including potentially drawing funds from savings. Bipartisan Senate leaders have proposed new revenue measures like oil tax hikes, but these face obstacles in the divided House. The future of the state’s finances remains uncertain as legislators continue to navigate the complex budgeting process amidst shrinking oil revenue and economic uncertainty.
