French Minister asserts that prisons are the target of drug-related ‘terrorist attack’.

France’s justice minister has labeled recent gun and arson attacks on several prisons around the country as acts of terrorism directed at security officials. These attacks, believed to be linked to government crackdowns on drug crime, have targeted prisons where gang leaders are incarcerated. Despite efforts to combat drug trafficking in France, gangs continue to profit and expand their operations. The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation into these attacks, which also targeted the National School of Prison Administration. The attacks are believed to be orchestrated by a far-left militant group, although no claim of responsibility has been made. In response, the government has increased security measures and proposed new laws to tackle organized crime and drug trafficking.

Justice Minister Darmanin has compared these prison attacks to contracts given to gangsters to assault or kill rivals, signaling a dangerous escalation in criminal activity. The rise in gang-related crime has fueled support for the far-right National Rally party and led to proposed measures to isolate top criminal figures in high-security prisons. Lawmakers are close to approving a new anti-drug trafficking law that aims to enhance police investigative powers and establish a national organized crime prosecutors’ office. Overall, the government is determined to combat drug-related violence and ensure the safety of security officials and prisons across France.
