Special Olympian Tanya Roberts has been a beloved member of the Penn State Berkey Creamery team for 14 years. At 31 years old, she has won the Pennsylvania state championship in bowling and is now aiming for the national competition. Roberts started her Special Olympics journey at the age of 5, participating in swimming and later trying out various sports like track and field, bocce, volleyball, and, her favorite, bowling. Despite facing challenges like contracting double pneumonia in the past, Roberts has shown resilience and determination in her athletic pursuits.
Leroy Young, head coach of The Wilds Region Special Olympics, has been instrumental in guiding Roberts and her team to victory. Young, whose son has Down syndrome, has been involved with the Special Olympics for over 20 years, highlighting the importance of volunteers and coaches in the organization. With the support of her father and fellow volunteers, Roberts has thrived in the Special Olympics community, making lasting connections and gaining confidence through her participation.
Looking ahead, Roberts and her team are eager to continue training for future competitions, with the ultimate goal of representing Pennsylvania at the national level. Young commended Roberts for her positive attitude and joyful personality, emphasizing the impact she has had on the organization. Roberts also volunteers with Best Buddies, helping students with disabilities at State College Area High School. Through her dedication and passion for sports, Roberts serves as an inspiration to her community and beyond.
