Marilu Mendez and her husband Juan were followed and then surrounded by ICE agents in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The agents mistakenly thought Juan was someone else and proceeded to break into their car, despite the couple’s efforts to wait for their lawyer. Juan, an undocumented Guatemalan immigrant in the process of changing his immigration status, was taken into custody and is now being held in a detention facility. The couple’s lawyer criticized the use of violence in the situation and emphasized that Juan was within his rights. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell raised concerns about ICE’s actions and called for more clarity on their tactics. He questioned whether ICE was targeting convicted criminals or engaging in indiscriminate round-ups of individuals with uncertain immigrant status. The public is demanding an explanation from the Trump administration regarding these actions. ICE has not responded to requests for comment on the incident.
