A recent study conducted at the University of Surrey has revealed that night owls may have a higher risk of depression compared to those who wake up early. The research, led by Simon Evans, a neuroscience lecturer at the university, focused on the sleep habits of participants and their mental states.

Participants were asked to fill out electronic questionnaires that gathered information about their sleep habits, chronotypes, symptoms of depression, level of mindfulness, and sleep quality. The results showed a strong link between staying up late and increased symptoms of depression.

Evans highlighted that the worsening of depression symptoms in night owls can be attributed to factors such as sleep deprivation, ruminating on negative thoughts, and the influence of societal demands that go against their biological nature. Researchers found that low attentiveness, poor sleep quality, and high alcohol consumption contribute to the higher risk of depression in owls.

The study also pointed out the impact of bright light exposure at night on owls’ sleep and mental health. Chronic exposure to bright light can elevate stress hormone levels in the body, resulting in depression and decreased cognitive function. Improving sleep habits, reducing screen time before bed, establishing calming evening routines, and engaging in mindfulness practices can help reduce the risk of depression in night owls.

The research emphasizes the importance of understanding and addressing the sleep patterns and mental health of night owls to prevent depressive symptoms. Scientists suggest that early intervention and lifestyle adjustments can help stabilize mental health in the long run.
