Howell’s downtown may not have taken the top spot in USA Today’s 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Main Street this year, but it did secure fourth place. Known for its walkable shopping and dining district housed in historic buildings, Howell offers a unique experience for visitors and locals alike. Annual events such as the Melon Fest, Balloon Fest, and Fantasy of Lights Parade draw in thousands of visitors each year, while regular community gatherings like the farmers’ market keep the downtown bustling.
In recent years, efforts to enhance Howell’s downtown have included the completion of an award-winning playground, murals added throughout the area as part of the Howell Art Project, and revitalization of spaces like Peanut Alley, now known as The Alley District. Though Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, snagged the top spot this year, Howell’s fourth-place ranking still recognizes the charm and appeal of its Main Street.
Last year, Howell claimed the title of Best Main Street in America and celebrated with the 517 Block Party, showcasing the community spirit and local pride that sets Howell apart. With local landmarks such as the historic courthouse and Historic Howell Theater, as well as a variety of unique businesses and events, downtown Howell continues to be a vibrant destination worth exploring.
