Sen. Chris Van Hollen traveled to El Salvador to meet with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported by the Trump administration in March. Despite a Supreme Court ruling ordering his return, Abrego Garcia has not been transported back to the U.S. Van Hollen met with Abrego Garcia, whose images were posted online by Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele. Van Hollen has accused the Trump administration of trying to cover up the wrongful deportation. He attempted to visit Abrego Garcia in a detention facility but was denied entry by soldiers. The vice president of El Salvador also denied requests for a phone call between Abrego Garcia and his wife. Maryland officials have demanded proof of Abrego Garcia’s health and safety, as his family has not received any confirmation since his deportation. Abrego Garcia migrated to the U.S. in 2011 and was protected by a 2019 court order against being sent back to El Salvador. The situation is ongoing, and updates are expected. Van Hollen continues to advocate for Abrego Garcia’s return to the U.S.
