What does the SAVE Act do and how might it change things for us?

Controversial Bill Threatens Voting Rights in Alaska

A controversial bill known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act, is making its way through Congress. If passed, the bill would amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993. The SAVE Act recently passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support, but concerns are being raised in Alaska.

Advocacy groups in Alaska are worried about the potential impact of the legislation on Native Alaskans, women, military members, voter registrars, and voters in rural areas. The bill would require documented proof of citizenship for voter registration, ruling out some forms of identification commonly used by Alaskans.

Critics argue that the bill would disenfranchise voters who have changed their names, and those who cannot easily access one of the six locations in the state where they must register in person. The bill’s supporters claim that the new requirements are necessary to prevent non-citizens from voting in U.S. elections.

Opponents argue that the bill is a solution in search of a problem, as instances of non-citizens attempting to vote in Alaska are extremely rare. They also worry that the legislation could make it more difficult for certain groups of voters to participate in the democratic process.

The SAVE Act has not yet been scheduled for debate in the Senate, where it would need support from seven Democrats to pass. Despite the controversy, Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska is supportive of the bill, believing that it will protect the integrity of American elections.

As the debate continues, advocates and opponents of the SAVE Act are making their voices heard, emphasizing the importance of protecting voter rights while ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
