A meteor was captured on an Alaska State Trooper’s dashcam as it hurtled through Earth’s atmosphere in broad daylight, quickly tracking across the sky over the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, just north of Anchorage. Multiple videos of the fireball were captured by various cameras, including one set to The Beatles’ song “Here Comes the Sun.” This may have been part of the recent Lyrid meteor shower which peaked earlier in the week.
Similarly, a green fireball streaked across the pre-dawn sky from Maryland to Ontario, captivating witnesses. Initially thought to be a mysterious light, it was confirmed to be a meteoroid by the American Meteor Society. Every April, Earth passes through debris from the trail of comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, creating the dazzling celestial display known as meteors.
NASA explains that these meteors are chunks of debris that burn up in the atmosphere as they fall at high speeds, creating bright streaks of light. Despite about 48.5 tons of meteoritic material falling to Earth each day, most of it is vaporized upon entry. Keep an eye out for more celestial events throughout the year to witness these shooting stars lighting up the night sky.
