The importance of having a dependable, young, and inexpensive quarterback in the NFL has led teams to often select quarterbacks higher in the draft than their overall ranking. This trend has been seen in recent drafts, with an average of 3.8 quarterbacks being selected in the first round since 2018. However, the 2025 NFL draft saw a departure from this trend, with only one quarterback being selected in the first 25 picks.
Miami’s Cam Ward was selected No. 1 overall by the Tennessee Titans, but quarterbacks were mostly passed over until Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart was selected by the New York Giants at No. 25. This draft class was considered talented but with noticeable flaws that gave teams pause in selecting them early.
Despite the ongoing need for quality quarterbacks in the league, teams have avoided reaching for quarterbacks in the draft so far. Analyst Chris Simms noted that quarterbacks are often overdrafted due to the importance of the position, leading to high expectations for players who may not meet them.
One notable player who was not selected in the first round was Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, who was expected to be a top-10 pick. Sanders was favored to land with the New Orleans Saints, but they and other teams with quarterback needs passed on him in the first round.
The draft will continue with the second and third rounds, where quarterbacks like Alabama’s Jalen Milroe remain available for selection.
