Sun Prairie Embraces AI Traffic Cameras to Enhance Road Safety
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WKOW) — The City of Sun Prairie is revolutionizing traffic management with the introduction of AI-powered traffic cameras at three key intersections. This innovative technology aims to optimize traffic flow, reducing wait times and enhancing road safety.
According to Transportation Coordinator David Salmon, the AI system detects vehicles, particularly in left turn lanes, and communicates with traffic lights to change signals accordingly. "It ensures that vehicles waiting to turn left receive the green light they need," he explained. This smart approach is part of Sun Prairie’s "Vision Zero Community" initiative, aimed at eliminating serious injuries and fatalities on local roads.
The AI system, developed by NoTraffic, not only manages traffic but also collects data that will aid law enforcement in identifying safety issues. "We provide insights into moments like red-light running, which can help agencies address specific traffic concerns," said Tom Cooper, Vice President of Public Sector at NoTraffic. Notably, the technology is restricted by Wisconsin law from issuing automated traffic tickets for speeding or red-light violations; its primary function is to improve signal operations.
The initiative is seen as a critical step in reducing accidents at intersections, highlighted as high-risk areas for vehicular and pedestrian incidents. "With this technology, we gain 24/7 data on traffic behaviors at our busiest intersections, enabling us to respond effectively," added Salmon.
Looking ahead, Sun Prairie plans to expand this AI-driven system to at least four more intersections by the end of 2025, potentially incorporating portable cameras from different suppliers. This proactive approach is set to transform how traffic is managed in Sun Prairie, ensuring safer and more efficient streets for all residents.
