Title: Juneau Residents Rally Against Trump’s Executive Orders in Nationwide Protest
Date: February 5, 2025
Juneau, Alaska – Over 100 residents gathered outside the Alaska State Capitol on Wednesday to participate in a nationwide protest against President Donald Trump’s recent executive orders. This event was part of a larger movement known as 50501, which organized simultaneous demonstrations across all 50 states.
In his first week in office, President Trump issued several executive orders affecting a range of issues crucial to Alaskans, including climate change, oil exploration, and immigration policies. Local advocate Jamiann S’eiltin Hasselquist led the crowd in chants, urging attendees to unite in defense of democracy, particularly for immigrants and Alaska Native communities. "We’re asking our legislature to protect our democracy," she emphasized.
Among the protesters was Luma Diaz, who donned an Argentinian flag and held a sign featuring Princess Leia from “Star Wars.” Diaz expressed her commitment to standing for immigration and women’s rights, stating, “We are the ones that make America great.”
Paul Desloover echoed concerns about the Trump administration, linking its policies to those of Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy. "Our governor is just like Trump," he noted, highlighting fears about the impact on democracy.
Another participant, Maggie Drapeaux, voiced alarm over potential cuts to the U.S. Department of Education, stressing the importance of federal funds for local schools.
The rally also saw the presence of state lawmakers, including Rep. Sara Hannan, who addressed the anxiety within the community over the economic implications of cuts to federal support, vital for Alaska’s funding.
The protest in Juneau reflected a strong desire among residents to stand up for their rights and protect essential services as they navigate these uncertain political times.
