Alaska Quarterly Review Celebrates Human Connections in New Volume

The “Alaska Quarterly Review, Winter and Spring 2025,” Vol. 41 No. 1 & 2, edited by Ronald Spatz, continues its legacy of showcasing exceptional contemporary literature. This latest 256-page volume features six short stories, a captivating novella, five personal essays, and poems from 26 talented poets, many recognized in the literary world alongside emerging voices.

The issue’s thematic focus revolves around human relationships, emphasizing love and support during challenging times. It includes works in both traditional and innovative forms, with a strong presence of imagistic, lyrical language. Notably, Christie Hodgen’s novella, “The Wrestler,” takes center stage, exploring the complex dynamics between two estranged brothers meeting in New Orleans after years apart. The narrative is enriched by a retired wrestler character, adding depth and humor to the brothers’ emotional reunion.

Short stories reflect poignant family relationships, such as Susan A. H. Grace’s “Brothers,” encapsulating a Black man’s memories of a racially charged past intertwined with familial loss. The essays delve into themes of caregiving, loss, and legacy, ultimately seeking acceptance and healing, notably highlighted in Winter Grasso’s debut pieces addressing the realities of young women in a harsh societal context.

The poetry section features works by both current and former Alaskan poets, addressing themes of connection and empathy. Standout contributions include John Morgan’s “Her Shame” and Qaggun Chelsey Zibell’s debut verses. The edition encapsulates a rich tapestry of human experience, vividly illustrated by a cover photo of horned puffins by Kodiak photographer Marion Owen.
