Anchorage Artist Creates Community Through Monthly Art Workshops
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – An Anchorage artist is fostering community spirit by hosting monthly art workshops at Rage City Vintage. On the last Sunday of every month, Audry Strezoski brings along supplies and offers attendees a brief lesson on various artistic materials.
Participants don’t need to be seasoned artists; Strezoski welcomes individuals of all skill levels. Previous workshops have featured techniques like embroidery and watercolor, drawing interest from a wide range of attendees. “I think there aren’t enough spaces out in Anchorage where people can gather during the daytime,” Strezoski stated, highlighting the need for social crafting venues, as existing options primarily focus on nightlife.
Each month features a new medium; for example, April’s art jam showcased washi tape, inviting participants to experiment with color in their drawings. Strezoski has collected various tapes over the years, making this month’s materials easily accessible for attendees. This April event marked the third installment of the Queer Art Jam, which Strezoski initiated in hopes of creating the community space they had long desired.
“I kind of had this vision for a little while, mostly because I wanted that space for myself,” they explained, recognizing that others likely share the same need. For a suggested donation of $10, Strezoski aims to raise funds for future materials and continue expanding this creative sanctuary within Anchorage’s LGBTQ+ community.
With the workshops, Strezoski hopes to not only teach new skills but also cultivate meaningful connections among participants, ensuring everyone leaves feeling inspired.
