Seismic Activity Report: April 29, 2025 Earthquake in Interior Alaska
On April 29, 2025, at 18:21 AKDT, a magnitude Ml earthquake struck the Interior of Alaska, approximately 31 miles west of Manley Hot Springs. It occurred at a depth of 5.3 miles (8 km) and has not yet been reviewed by a seismologist. The epicenter was located at coordinates 65.1642°N, 151.6334°W, with notable proximity to several communities, including Rampart, Minto, and Fairbanks.
This region’s seismicity is attributed to complex tectonic interactions, featuring right-lateral strike-slip faults such as Denali, Tintina, and Kaltag. Additionally, north-northeast-trending seismic zones including Minto, Fairbanks, and Rampart play significant roles in regional earthquakes. The Interior Alaska region has a history of notable seismic events, including the 1937 M7.3 Salcha Earthquake, which led to significant ground failures but no surface rupture. Other significant earthquakes in the area include the 1968 M7.1 Rampart and the 1985 M6.1 Dall City earthquakes.
The Fairbanks Seismic Zone notably experienced three M5-6 events in 1967, highlighting ongoing seismic risks. The most substantial thrusting event in recent history occurred in 1947, registering M7.2 at the northern foothills of the Alaska Range, showcasing the region’s complex tectonic activity. Current seismic trends suggest continuing thrusting deformation along the north side of the central Alaska Range, while seismic activity significantly decreases east of longitude 146 degrees west.
