Strong Earthquake Rocks Yakutat Region

On May 4, 2025, a significant earthquake registered at a magnitude of 6.0, striking near Yakutat, Alaska. The quake occurred at 00:07:21 AKDT (08:07:21 UTC) and was recorded at a depth of 0.0 miles (0 km). This seismic event, which remains unreviewed by a seismologist, was located approximately 74 miles northeast of Yakutat and 140 miles northwest of Gustavus.

The Yakutat microplate, known for its complex tectonic interactions, is situated along transform faults, including the Queen Charlotte and Fairweather faults. The collision between the microplate and the continental margin of southern Alaska contributes to an active seismic belt.
