Liz Cheney Praises Senator Murkowski, Critiques GOP in Anchorage Speech

Former U.S. Representative Liz Cheney delivered a bold address in Anchorage on Thursday, criticizing the current state of the Republican Party while praising Alaska’s senior U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski for her courage. Speaking at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, Cheney acknowledged that Murkowski is among the few Republicans willing to stand up against former President Donald Trump.

“There are very few Republicans who will be consistently counted on to do the right thing,” Cheney remarked, highlighting Murkowski’s reelection in 2022 against a Trump-backed opponent.

Cheney, who lost her seat in the 2022 primary to a Trump loyalist after co-chairing the congressional committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot, condemned Trump for his pardons of rioters and criticized Republicans who support his actions. She stated, “The party has walked away from the Constitution,” declaring the GOP has become “a personality cult” centered around Trump.

Cheney referenced House Speaker Mike Johnson as “fundamentally dishonest” and called for voters to take action against Trump’s influence in the Republican Party. “It’s crucially important that in 2026, the Republicans lose the majority in the House and the Senate,” she asserted.

Encouraging civic engagement, Cheney urged the audience to protest against Trump’s administration, write letters, and consider running for office to replace ineffective officials. Her message resonated with attendees, many of whom had just participated in an anti-Trump protest nearby.

Despite her political setbacks, Cheney remains active, forming a political action committee and speaking nationwide, as evidenced by her recent appearance in Anchorage.
