British authorities are investigating two likely state-sponsored plots involving primarily Iranian nationals, following the arrest of eight individuals across the UK, seven of whom are Iranian. The arrests occurred under a section of the UK’s 2023 National Security Act, which allows for detaining those suspected of collusion with foreign powers. Although the two plots are separate, officials are assessing if a common entity is orchestrating them.
The first plot led to the detainment of five men, aged 29 to 46, under the Terrorism Act for allegedly preparing a terrorist act. These arrests unfolded in various locations including London and Manchester. Specific details about the potential targets remain undisclosed, but police have indicated the investigation is developing rapidly.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper described these incidents as major operations, emphasizing their significance in combating state threats and terrorism in recent years. Broadening the context, Iranian nationals in the UK have previously been involved in targeting expatriates, particularly journalists. For instance, Iran International, a Farsi-language network critical of Tehran, relocated to the US due to threats against its personnel. An investigation revealed plans by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps to harm its journalists, which were thwarted when the hired smuggler became a double agent.
In the past year, the UK has seen 20 Iran-backed plots, posing serious threats to dissidents and journalists. Minister of State Dan Jarvis noted that Iran’s tactics aim to suppress dissent through intimidation and highlighted ongoing dangers to Jewish and Israeli individuals, revealing a longstanding pattern of aggression from Iranian intelligence.
