As a prominent pastor and civil rights activist, Barber was advocating for the preservation of Medicaid, which covers over 71 million low-income individuals. He emphasized that health care should be non-discriminatory, noting that COVID-19 affected people regardless of race or political affiliation.
Barber criticized the Republican plans to dismantle the Affordable Care Act while aiming to cut $880 billion in Medicaid spending. He argued that such budget cuts would exacerbate inequalities, especially in Black and Latino communities. Republicans, led by House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Brett Guthrie, assert that cuts aim to enhance healthcare options and reduce fraud but have released few specifics on how these goals will be achieved. Barber highlighted the severity of the crisis, stating that poverty leads to the deaths of many, and called for a broader focus on economic equality. His Poor People’s Campaign seeks to address the voices of poor and lower-wage voters, who often feel sidelined in political discourse.
In response to the protest, Barber’s organization, Repairers of the Breach, pledged ongoing advocacy by bringing moral analyses to congressional leaders until meaningful change occurs. Barber, along with fellow activists, was arrested for violating restrictions on demonstrations in congressional buildings during their silent prayer in the Capitol. Their actions reflect a longstanding commitment to social justice, aiming to draw attention to the dire consequences of Medicaid cuts.
