An upper-level low is moving south of the Alaska Range, bringing rain to parts of Southcentral.

Weather Update for Alaska: Changes Ahead

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Weather conditions across Alaska are shifting as a low pressure system in the Gulf weakens and moves southward. Coastal regions of Southcentral and Southeast are expected to experience fewer showers, while an upper-level low is forecasted to bring snow to the Alaska Range, affecting areas farther south.

SOUTHCENTRAL

Though some sunshine is anticipated today, cloud cover will increase throughout the day as the upper-level low shifts southwest. Light snow has already been reported in Glennallen, where accumulation is expected. By evening, rain will spread into the Mat-Su Valley, with Hatcher Pass possibly seeing snow. Rainfall projections for affected areas range from .10 to half an inch, particularly near Talkeetna and Broad Pass, with a light wintry mix expected. Anchorage may experience showers on Thursday morning, otherwise dry conditions are predicted for the week’s close.

SOUTHEAST

Rain will be light today across Southeast, totaling less than .30 inches. With temperatures in the upper 40s and lower 50s, short dry breaks precede additional rainfall later in the week. The weakening low southeast of Kodiak will bring moisture from Thursday into Friday, particularly impacting the Central and Southern Panhandle.

INTERIOR

Showers and snow continue in the Southern Interior, especially along the Parks Highway, with an expected accumulation of 3 to 7 inches. Drivers should be cautious of slick roads, particularly today and into the night.

OUTLOOK

Expect warmer conditions for Mother’s Day, with Southcentral and the Interior likely to see pleasant temperatures. Highs in the Interior could reach into the 60s, while Southcentral will likely see mid to upper 50s.
