Iran’s Assistive Technology Model Recognized at Global GATE Summit 2025
TEHRAN – Iran’s innovative model of assistive technology has gained international recognition at the Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology (GATE) Summit 2025, hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. This summit convenes global stakeholders to emphasize actions needed for equitable access to assistive technology, particularly in developing nations.
Mostafa Qanei, secretary of the biotechnology development office of Iran’s Vice Presidency for Science and Technology, presented the country’s initiatives in the assistive technology sector, detailing the government’s alignment with WHO’s GATE framework. He expressed the importance of collaborations, particularly with UNICEF, stressing the role of emerging digital technologies in enhancing access.
Fernando Botelho, an assistive technology program specialist, praised Iran’s endeavours, highlighting the model as exemplary for other developing nations. Since 2019, Iran and UNICEF have collaborated on innovation challenges aimed at improving access for children and adolescents, marking a significant aspect of their partnership.
The ultimate aim of this cooperation includes elevating Iran’s achievements in technology development and policy-making at international forums, as well as supporting local businesses in the assistive technology sector. The focus on establishing an innovation ecosystem is pivotal, drawing stakeholder investment and participation.
The GATE Summit plans to build on the sector’s progress, striving for a consensus-driven roadmap that ensures equitable access to assistive technology, vital for achieving better health outcomes and the Sustainable Development Goals. A global report estimates that 2.5 billion people require assistive technology, a number projected to rise to 3.5 billion by 2050, underscoring the urgent need for effective access strategies.
Through knowledge sharing and partnership enhancement, the GATE Summit aims to increase awareness of assistive technology and foster a collaborative environment for action on this critical issue.
