Joe Biden Criticizes Trump for ‘Foolish’ Deference to Putin

In a recent BBC Radio 4 interview, former President Joe Biden criticized the Trump administration’s approach to Russia, dubbing it “modern-day appeasement.” He argued that entertaining the idea of allowing Vladimir Putin to keep territory gained from the 2022 invasion is naïve. Biden stressed that the belief that this would satisfy the Russian leader was foolish and likened it to the appeasement policies of the 1930s towards Nazi Germany. He believes that Putin aims to re-establish something akin to the Warsaw Pact following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Biden also defended his record on various issues, including the economy and U.S. support for Ukraine, while expressing concerns about the potential erosion of NATO. He highlighted that NATO has historically been crucial in maintaining global peace, warning that a decline of the alliance would have serious implications for world history. The former president emphasized the gravity of current threats to democracy and the necessity of NATO’s collective defense clause.

Responding to criticisms regarding his administration’s support for Ukraine, particularly early in the invasion, Biden noted that his administration had provided substantial aid, averting a potential world war. He acknowledged the difficult decision he faced when stepping aside from the Democratic nomination in favor of Kamala Harris, ultimately concluding it was the right choice despite its challenges. Throughout the interview, Biden’s remarks underscored a significant divergence from Trump’s foreign policy, which he argued has fragmented long-standing diplomatic norms and alliances.
