In a dramatic incident in Louisville, Kentucky, a tractor-trailer crashed and dangled precariously from an overpass on Interstate 65 with the driver trapped inside. In a gut-wrenching 911 call, the driver expressed his fear for his life, pleading for help and requesting that the call recording be preserved for his family if he didn’t survive. Martyna Wohner, the 911 operator, provided reassurance during the over 18-minute conversation, assuring him that rescuers were on the way.
The Louisville Fire Department quickly arrived at the scene and stabilized the truck with chains. Firefighters prepared a complex rescue operation, deemed “fundamentally dangerous” by Fire Chief Brian O’Neill, who has witnessed similar rescues only rarely in his career. A firefighter was lowered into the cab using a rope system from a tower ladder, where he managed to secure the driver with a climbing harness before hoisting them both to safety. Remarkably, the rescue operation lasted just over 30 minutes.
The unidentified driver, once on solid ground, even gave a thumbs-up, highlighting his relief. Chief O’Neill reflected on the emotional impact of the rescue, noting that emergency responders often encounter people on their worst days, making successful outcomes all the more rewarding. In similar past incidents, including a previous rescue of a driver hanging over the Ohio River, all parties involved emerged safely. The successful rescue in this instance underscores the dedication and skill of the firefighters, as they transformed a life-threatening situation into a story of survival and reunification with family.
