Sen. Josh Hawley and 75 Alaskan women advocate for access to abortion pills.

Senator Hawley Addresses Abortion Pill Safety Concerns

U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, is intensifying efforts against abortion pill distributors following a troubling new study indicating that nearly 11% of women experience “serious adverse effects” after using Mifepristone. In response, Hawley introduced the Restoring Safeguards for Dangerous Abortion Drugs Act on May 6. This legislation aims to direct the FDA to implement stricter safeguards for Mifepristone, grant women who face complications the right to sue telehealth providers and pharmacies, and prohibit foreign companies from mailing the drug into the U.S.

In Alaska, recent data shows that 56% of the 1,222 women who obtained abortions chose the pill, indicating that around 75 women may have encountered serious complications in just the past year. The surge of online abortion pill distributors since the Dobbs decision has created an uncertain landscape, potentially masking the true number of women affected. Many may be struggling with complications in silence.

While there is hope for the passage of Hawley’s legislation, it remains uncertain. However, those affected have options: families and friends are encouraged to support women by reporting adverse complications. Guidance for submitting complaints to the State of Alaska can be found here and here, with the possibility for anonymity.

As a pro-life ministry, our ultimate goal is to render abortion unthinkable and illegal. Until that is achieved, it is vital to protect women from misleading claims about abortion being a form of healthcare. They deserve better.
