Concern Grows Over GOP Moves to Undermine Social Security, Medicaid

By Jessica Corbett | Common Dreams on May 7, 2025

As the Senate GOP confirms the nomination of Bisignano, labor leaders warn that the administration may be targeting Social Security for cuts and privatization. “Their playbook is clearly to break Social Security so they can justify further cuts and privatization,” said a labor leader, expressing grave concerns over the future of the program designed to support millions of Americans.

Meanwhile, House Democrats are working diligently to counter the GOP’s initiatives threatening vital services. Representative Greg Casar, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, called out House Republicans, asking, “Will any House Republican join us, or will they all support taking healthcare and food from millions of Americans?” This inquiry highlights the increasing tensions around Medicaid and SNAP, with Democratic lawmakers launching efforts to prevent further GOP erosions of these essential programs.

In related news, the controversial tariff policies introduced by the Trump administration have drawn criticism for exacerbating financial burdens on families. Critics claim these tariffs have led to skyrocketing costs for essential items for raising children. “His tariff policies are making it harder and more expensive to prepare for a new baby or raise kids,” expressed critics, who label the issue as a “Baby Tax.”

Concerns also extend to the education sector, where advocacy groups are alarmed by proposals for wage garnishment for student loan borrowers. “They’re just cruel and want to take as much as possible from the folks who have very little,” lamented one advocacy group.

Lastly, professionals from the entertainment industry have voiced their fears over potential Hollywood tariffs, stating that it could “destroy” the industry as they know it. With these issues unfolding, the political landscape remains tense as advocates fight for crucial social services.
