Weather Update: Southcentral Alaska Prepares for a Warmer Mother’s Day Weekend

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Light rain showers continue to fall across inland areas of Southcentral Alaska as an upper-level low moves south of the Alaska Range. The Mat-Su region has seen most precipitation, with some showers reaching northern parts of the Kenai Peninsula. Rainfall is expected to lighten as the weekend approaches, with more rain anticipated in Southeast Alaska, potentially accumulating up to a couple of inches by Sunday morning.

For Southcentral, while rain showers persist, most activity is projected to taper off by mid-morning or early afternoon. Cloud cover will linger, but late-day sunshine is on the horizon. Highs are expected to reach seasonal values in the 40s and 50s. Looking ahead to Mother’s Day weekend, temperatures could soar into the mid to upper 50s, with certain areas, like the Mat-Su, possibly hitting the 60s.

Southeast Alaska will see a resurgence of rain today, with central and southern regions likely experiencing the heaviest rainfall—expected to reach 1 to 3 inches by Saturday morning. Meanwhile, in Interior Alaska, conditions are improving, moving toward sunnier weather, particularly as Mother’s Day nears, with temperatures projected to peak in the mid to upper 60s.

The North Slope and Western Alaska should remain relatively calm with high pressure in play, although isolated rain and snow showers could develop in parts of Norton Sound. The Aleutians are currently experiencing rain, with a mix of rain and snow expected in the Pribilof Islands. Looking ahead, Mother’s Day weekend appears promising across Mainland Alaska, with dry conditions in store, although another round of rain is set to arrive by Sunday night.
