Kodiak’s terminal is set for an upgrade by Alaska Airlines. Exciting changes ahead!

Alaska Airlines Announces Expansion of Kodiak Terminal

Alaska Airlines has announced an extensive expansion and upgrade of its Kodiak terminal at the Kodiak Benny Benson State Airport. During a recent visit, Alaska’s Regional Vice President, Marilyn Romano, emphasized that the Kodiak and Utqiagvik (Barrow) terminals are top priorities for the airline, which is currently undergoing a system-wide upgrade of its 13 owned rural properties statewide.

The new terminal design will nearly double the existing footprint, significantly enlarging the terminal, baggage handling area, and back offices. Additionally, the freight handling facilities will be enhanced to include heated storage. Renovation work is set to commence in summer 2026 and will span the following years, though the total project cost remains undetermined.

The upgraded facility will feature a modern atrium-style passenger area, complete with window walls and a large overhang to shield customers from the weather. Alaska Airlines aims for a fresh start, with a complete demolition of the existing building to ensure optimal functionality and efficiency. Key improvements include separate corridors for arriving and departing passengers and a notably larger baggage claim area.

Romano noted that while larger projects take precedence, Kodiak is now the top focus. Following completion in 2026, the Kodiak terminal project is expected to go out for bid later this year. Alaska Airlines continues to adapt to fluctuating passenger and freight numbers, which have stabilized in recent years, reflecting trends in the regional seafood industry.
