Press Release: Alaska Senator Advocates for Public Education Investment
Sen. Löki Gale Tobin of Anchorage has reiterated the vital role of public education in Alaska, emphasizing its importance not only as a basic right but also as a means to empower children to achieve their full potential. Addressing the Alaska Senate in May 2024, Tobin reflected on the troubled legacy of education as a tool for assimilation and privilege, underscoring the need for a robust education system accessible to all.
“Public education is a lifeline,” Tobin stated. “It ensures every child—regardless of their background—can pursue their dreams.” She highlighted the need for schools to address basic needs, noting that children arriving hungry or dealing with home challenges often struggle academically. “Learning is nearly impossible in the face of unmet basic needs,” she said.
Tobin criticized ongoing funding cuts, arguing they hinder the ability of public schools to provide a safe and supportive environment. Many Alaskan schools suffer from disrepair, with classrooms affected by issues like black mold, and a worrying number of classrooms lack certified teachers. “Our schools are starving for resources, not failing,” she asserted.
Instead of penalizing students for lower assessment scores, Tobin advocates for using assessments to identify areas for support. She called on state leaders to prioritize consistent funding, which is essential for maintaining infrastructure and attracting talented educators.
Tobin’s message resonates with Alaskans who are calling for increased funding to enhance the public education system. “Every child deserves access to a safe school environment. Our children’s futures depend on it,” she concluded, reinforcing the need for legislative commitment to education reform.
Sen. Tobin chairs the Alaska Senate Education Committee and is also pursuing a Ph.D. in culturally responsive education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
