ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated as India reportedly fired missiles at three air bases in Pakistan, although most were intercepted, according to Pakistan’s army spokesman. This follows a gun massacre in India-controlled Kashmir last month, which India attributed to Pakistan. In response, state-run media in Pakistan announced retaliatory strikes targeting multiple locations in India without providing specific details.
Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif, the Pakistani army spokesman, confirmed the safety of Pakistan’s air force assets and revealed that some Indian missiles struck areas of eastern Punjab. He condemned the missile launches as a serious provocation. The targeted Pakistani air bases included Nur Khan in Rawalpindi, Murid in Chakwal, and Rafiqui in Jhang. Sharif also stated that some Indian missiles fell into Afghanistan, claiming six ballistic missiles were fired from Adampur in India, with several impacting the Indian region of Amritsar.
On the Indian side, the military reported drone sightings across 26 locations near the border, indicating heightened vigilance. The Indian army noted prompt action in response to these threats. The current crisis was sparked by an attack on a tourist site in Kashmir that killed 26 civilians, for which India accused Pakistan of complicity—a claim Pakistan denied.
Recent actions included Indian airstrikes on Pakistan, reportedly resulting in civilian casualties, which Pakistan contested by asserting that it shot down five Indian jets. As both nations engage in mutual accusations and military actions, the situation remains tense, with both sides claiming to have thwarted attacks. Independent verification of these military claims has not been possible.
