Governor Proclaims Peace Officers Memorial Day in Alaska

Governor Mike Dunleavy has officially declared May 15, 2025, as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week of May 11-17, 2025, as Alaska Law Enforcement Week. This proclamation honors the courageous efforts and sacrifices made by law enforcement officers across the state.

This observance began in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day. It serves as a reminder to appreciate the vital roles that police officers play in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of Alaskans.

The proclamation acknowledges the inherent risks and challenges faced by law enforcement professionals, who work tirelessly under often dangerous and unpredictable conditions. It also highlights the sacrifices made by the families of these officers, who support them as they fulfill their challenging roles.

Governor Dunleavy calls on all Alaskans to participate in recognizing and respecting the dedication and valor exhibited by law enforcement agencies statewide. The measure particularly pays homage to those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities, encouraging citizens to reflect on their commitment to the safety and well-being of all.

As the state prepares to honor the fallen and celebrate the perseverance of current officers, this proclamation reinforces the importance of unity and gratitude in recognizing those who protect Alaska’s freedoms.
