Mother’s Day Celebration at Musk Ox Farm in Palmer, Alaska
PALMER, Alaska — A beloved Alaskan tradition returns this Mother’s Day at the Musk Ox Farm, where families can celebrate the occasion with some unique wildlife encounters. Moms will receive a daisy and complimentary admission on Sunday to meet the herd of 75 musk oxen, which includes three adorable calves.
Among the highlights is Trebek, an old bull named in honor of the late “Jeopardy!” host and farm benefactor. Mark Austin, the farm’s executive director, expressed the joy of sharing this experience: “Who doesn’t want to celebrate Mother’s Day with a musk ox mom and the most adorable calf you’re ever going to find?”
The Musk Ox Farm, which has been a part of Alaska’s landscape since 1964, marks Mother’s Day as the start of its summer season. Relocated to Palmer in 1986 for accessibility, the facility has grown into an educational hub, allowing visitors to learn about these ice age survivors in a stunning mountain backdrop.
With more than 1,500 visitors expected this Mother’s Day, the event has become a cherished family tradition spanning three generations. “If we ever talked about not doing it, there’d be a riot,” Austin quipped.
Once roaming widely through Europe, Asia, and North America, musk oxen were nearly extinct by the 1920s. Conservation efforts began in 1934, resulting in about 5,000 musk oxen now thriving in Alaska.
On this special day, the farm welcomes donations from visitors, emphasizing its commitment to giving back to the community. Austin noted, “It really gives us a chance to give something back.”
